The main function of the filter medium is to separate solid particles from the flowing liquid with the least energy consumption. The successful filtration process depends largely on the selection of the appropriate filter medium. Through research and experience accumulation, there is a lot of technical information available for reference on the performance and selection of filter media, but the selection of filter media still relies on some experiments on solid-liquid mixtures. These experimental operations must be very careful, and small changes in the experimental process may have a great impact on the results.

Due to the diversity of filter media, the selection of filter media is difficult. It is difficult to determine which filter medium is most suitable for the separation operation based only on particle size measurement and distribution. Changes in particle concentration and shape can also bring difficulties to practical applications.

Woven and non-woven filter cloths made of polymer materials: polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester, polyamide, polyvinyl chloride, etc. Monofilament double-layer composite filter cloth: The filter medium is double-sided, and the satin weave method weaves a smooth surface for filtration. The surface can be further improved by calendering. The lower layer of the coarser monofilament weave has better strength to play a supporting role and help drain the liquid. After penetrating the filter surface, the particles will not be retained by the filter cloth but will flow out along the funnel-shaped channels inside the support layer, and will not be stuck in the filter cloth to form a blockage, which also helps the filter cloth regeneration.

For large solid particles, metal sintered mesh or mat-shaped mesh can be selected as the filter medium to achieve higher filtration efficiency.
